“Towards a decarbonisation community at Bologna Freight Village”

NE Nomisma Energia, with Interporto di Bologna, has launched an innovative and ambitious feasibility project for a decarbonisation community in the logistics sector

The project (with the acronym DEC-LOG.COM) is promoted by Climate-KIC and financed by EIT funds with the objective of creating a community around a logistics hub such as an interport aimed at reducing its greenhouse and local emissions until its decarbonisation in the long term. In addition to the Bologna Freight Village, which is the main beneficiary of the project, the Freight Village's tenants, freight transport and trade associations, neighbouring municipalities and the entire community that uses the Freight Village's services are also called upon to provide their own solutions and contribution to the decarbonisation of the Freight Village and the decarbonisation of the freight transport sector in general. The basic idea, in fact, is to make every actor in this chain responsible, including the individual citizens who in various ways benefit from the Freight Village, including the related services to deliver their goods at a reduced cost, including environmental costs. The methodology used to identify the barriers and opportunities of the extension of the concept of energy community to that of decarbonisation community in the logistics and freight transport sector in order to pursue a lower environmental impact, reduction of greenhouse gases and local pollutant emissions, involved the organisation of 4 workshops with interested groups, along with first simulations of carbon neutrality in the period from June to December 2020.

All the workshops were conducted in online mode and involved several actors engaged in co-designing this decarbonisation community around the Bologna Freight Village including: Municipality of San Giorgio di Piano, Municipality of Bentivoglio, Municipality of Argelato, Union of Municipalities Reno Galliera; the condominium companies of the Freight Village: Schenker Italiana SpA, Due Torri SpA, Prologis, DHL Express Italy, Vailog, Confetra, Fercam, YNAP as well as ITL Foundation and Centergross, together with the community of engineering students of the University of Bologna.
